Target Information
The SMC3 gene belongs to the SMC3 subfamily of structural maintenance of chromosomes proteins.
The encoded protein exists as either a nuclear protein or a secreted form. The nuclear form (SMC3) is a component of the cohesin complex that holds sister chromatids together during mitosis, ensuring proper chromosome segregation.
Post-translational modification with chondroitin sulfate chains generates the secreted proteoglycan bamacan, a key basement membrane protein.
