Target Information

Interferon alpha (IFN-α) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Its interaction with receptor components activates signaling pathways that mediate innate immune responses against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN-α gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms along with single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are present in many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN-α is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a crucial role in antiviral defense and adaptive immune modulation. Dysfunction of IFN-α is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
