Target Information

IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins exclusive to vertebrates. The interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor components results in activation of multiple signaling pathways mainly involved in the innate immune response against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons include 14 alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are present in many species including rodents, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN alpha is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and acts as a potent component of the antiviral innate immune response, also modulating adaptive immunity.
Diseases associated with IFN alpha dysfunction include Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
