Target Information

IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins exclusive to vertebrates.
The interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor component results in the activation of multiple signaling pathways primarily involved in innate immune responses against viral infection.

In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons consist of 14 different alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are found in many species including rats, mice, birds, reptiles, and fish.

IFN alpha is mainly produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a key role in antiviral innate immunity and modulation of adaptive immunity.
Diseases associated with IFN alpha dysfunction include Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
