IL-6은 염증과 B 세포 성숙에 관여하는 사이토카인을 암호화하는 유전자입니다. 이 단백질은 자가면역 질환이나 감염 시 발열을 유도하는 내인성 발열물질로 작용합니다. 급성 및 만성 염증 부위에서 주로 발현되며, IL-6 수용체 알파를 통해 염증성 전사 반응을 유도합니다. IL-6의 기능은 당뇨병, 전신성 소아 류마티스 관절염 등 다양한 염증 관련 질환과 연관되어 있으며, COVID-19를 포함한 바이러스 감염에서 단백질 수치가 상승하는 것으로 보고되었습니다. IL6 관련 질환에는 Kaposi Sarcoma와 Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis가 포함됩니다.
