Goats were immunized with purified human C-reactive Protein (CRP) of serum or plasma origin. The antiserum was solid-phase adsorbed to ensure specificity. The antibody was isolated by affinity chromatography using antigen coupled to agarose beads.

Target Information

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is synthesized by the liver, and its plasma concentration increases markedly during inflammatory responses.

CRP functions as an initiator of the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a key role in innate immunity. It mediates activities associated with pre-immune nonspecific host resistance. CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may serve as a scavenger during cell necrosis. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
