Target Information
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is synthesized by the liver, and its plasma concentration increases dramatically during inflammation, infection, or tissue injury.
CRP acts as an initiator of the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a critical role in innate immunity. It also mediates pre-immune nonspecific host defense mechanisms by recognizing damaged cells and pathogens, promoting their clearance through humoral and cellular effector systems.
Elevated basal levels of CRP are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
