Target Information
Neuronal apoptosis inhibitor protein (NAIP) is the first human inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) identified, discovered through its association with spinal muscular atrophy.
Members of the IAP family contain one to three baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domains that mediate interactions with caspases (e.g., caspase-3, -7, -9) and TRAF family members.
Unlike other IAPs, NAIP requires ATP to bind caspase-9 and is not inhibited by Smac/DIABLO, indicating a unique regulatory mechanism.
Although only one human NAIP protein is identified, shorter NAIP mRNA transcripts have been reported.
