Target Information
Caspases are cysteine proteases expressed as inactive precursors that mediate apoptosis by proteolysis of specific substrates. They cleave after aspartic acid residues and are categorized into two classes involved in apoptosis:
- Initiator caspases (e.g., Caspase-8, Caspase-9): activated by receptor clustering or mitochondrial permeability transition.
- Effector caspases (e.g., Caspase-3, Caspase-7): processed by initiator caspases to execute cell collapse.
