Cellular Localization Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondrion, Cytoskeleton (microtubule organizing center, centrosome, spindle). Cytoplasmic during interphase. Colocalizes with SIRT2 on centrosome during prophase and spindle fibers during metaphase. Reversibly translocated from cytoplasm to nucleus when phosphorylated before G2-M transition with cyclin-B1. Accumulates in mitochondria in G2-arrested cells upon DNA-damage.

Background

Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and a catalytic subunit of the M-phase promoting factor (MPF), essential for G1/S and G2/M transitions in the eukaryotic cell cycle. Mitotic cyclins associate with CDK1 as regulatory subunits. The kinase activity is regulated by cyclin accumulation and degradation, as well as phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
