Cellular Localization Nucleus; Cytoplasm; Mitochondrion; Cytoskeleton (microtubule organizing center, centrosome, spindle). Cytoplasmic during interphase. Colocalizes with SIRT2 on centrosome during prophase and on spindle fibers during metaphase. Reversibly translocated from cytoplasm to nucleus before G2-M transition when associated with cyclin-B1. Accumulates in mitochondria in G2-arrested cells upon DNA damage.

Background

Cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and functions as a catalytic subunit of the M-phase promoting factor (MPF), which is essential for G1/S and G2/M phase transitions in the eukaryotic cell cycle. Mitotic cyclins associate with CDK1 as regulatory subunits, and its kinase activity is regulated by cyclin accumulation and degradation. Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of CDK1 play crucial roles in cell cycle control. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms of this protein.
