Background
The protein encoded by this gene shares strong similarity with Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein Cdc27 and Schizosaccharomyces pombe nuc2. It is a component of the anaphase-promoting complex (APC), a highly conserved eukaryotic multi-subunit complex that catalyzes the ubiquitination of B-type cyclins. This process is essential for cell cycle progression. The protein contains tetratricopeptide (TPR) repeats important for protein-protein interactions and interacts with mitotic checkpoint proteins such as Mad2, p55CDC, and BUBR1. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and related pseudogenes have been identified.
