Background
This gene encodes a member of the galectin family of carbohydrate-binding proteins with affinity for β-galactosides. The protein contains an N-terminal proline-rich tandem repeat domain and a C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain. It can self-associate via the N-terminal domain to bind multivalent saccharide ligands. Galectin-3 is localized in the extracellular matrix, cytoplasm, and nucleus, and participates in apoptosis, innate immunity, cell adhesion, and T-cell regulation. It also exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, Oct 2014)
