Background
This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, which catalyzes ATP synthesis using the proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane during oxidative phosphorylation. ATP synthase consists of two complexes: the soluble catalytic core (F1) and the membrane-spanning proton channel (Fo). The catalytic core includes five different subunits (α, β, γ, δ, ε) in a stoichiometry of 3α, 3β, and one each of the others. The proton channel comprises three main subunits (a, b, c). This gene encodes the α subunit of the catalytic core. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
