Background

Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility and are ubiquitously expressed in all eukaryotic cells.
In vertebrates, three main groups of actin isoforms—alpha, beta, and gamma—have been identified.

  • Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissues, major components of the contractile apparatus.
  • Beta and gamma actins: Coexist in most cell types as components of the cytoskeleton and mediators of internal cell motility.

Actin polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) leads to filamentous actin (F-actin) formation, a two-stranded helix structure. Each actin can bind to four others (by similarity).
Actin interacts with PFN1 and PFDN1 and belongs to the actin family.
