Background
Alpha-synuclein is a member of the synuclein family, which also includes beta- and gamma-synuclein. These proteins are abundantly expressed in the brain, where alpha- and beta-synuclein selectively inhibit phospholipase D2. SNCA may play a role in integrating presynaptic signaling and membrane trafficking.
Defects in SNCA are implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease, and SNCA peptides are major components of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease. Alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Feb 2016).
