Target Information
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine important for the proliferation of activated T cells and differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of the IL-2 gene in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, representing a unique regulatory mechanism. Disruption of an IL-2-like gene in mice leads to an ulcerative colitis-like disease, indicating its essential role in immune response to antigenic stimuli.
