Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a T cell stimulatory cytokine that induces T cell and NK cell proliferation and activation. Produced by T-cells in response to antigenic or mitogenic stimulation, IL-2 is required for T-cell proliferation and immune regulation. It can stimulate B-cells, monocytes, lymphokine-activated killer cells, natural killer cells, and glioma cells. The receptor of this cytokine is a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. IL-2 also induces CTLA-4 and functions as a survival factor for lymphocytes.

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine critical for proliferation of activated T cells, differentiation of B cells, and activation of NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7. Expression of the IL-2 gene in mature thymocytes is monoallelic, representing a unique regulatory mechanism. Disruption of IL-2-like genes in mice causes ulcerative colitis-like disease, highlighting its essential role in immune response regulation.
