Target Information
Spectrins are principal components of the cell membrane–cytoskeleton, composed of two alpha and two beta spectrin subunits.
The SPTBN2 gene encodes spectrin beta non-erythrocytic 2 (beta-III spectrin), which is distinct from the beta-II spectrin (SPTBN1).
SPTBN2 regulates the glutamate signaling pathway by stabilizing the glutamate transporter EAAT4 at the plasma membrane surface.
Mutations in SPTBN2 are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 5 (SCA5), characterized by neurodegeneration, locomotor incoordination, dysarthria, and uncoordinated eye movements.
