Target Information
Calmodulin mediates the control of numerous enzymes, ion channels, aquaporins, and other proteins through Ca²⁺ binding. The calmodulin–Ca²⁺ complex stimulates various protein kinases and phosphatases. Together with CCP110 and centrin, it regulates the centrosome cycle and cytokinesis progression.
Calmodulin is a small, highly conserved calcium-binding protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It binds up to four calcium ions and acts as an intracellular receptor for regulatory calcium signals. Binding calcium induces conformational changes that enhance affinity for target proteins. It functions both directly (via enzyme interaction) and indirectly (through kinases).
Calmodulin participates in diverse biological processes including:
- Energy and biosynthetic metabolism
- Cell motility and exocytosis
- Cytoskeletal assembly
- Intracellular modulation of cAMP and calcium concentrations
Calmodulin is the archetype of calcium-modulated proteins (≈20 members), located in the cytosol or membranes facing the cytosol, with high affinity for calcium. It contains 149 amino acids and four calcium-binding domains, functioning in growth, cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, and neurotransmitter synthesis and release.
