Caveolae는 세포막의 특수한 도메인으로, 다양한 지질 및 단백질 분자의 격리에 관여합니다. 이 구조는 지질 대사, 성장 조절, 신호 전달, 세포사멸 등 다양한 생화학적 과정에서 중요한 역할을 합니다. Caveolin은 이종삼합체 G-단백질과 상호작용하며 이를 조절합니다. Caveolin 다유전자 패밀리에는 21–24 kDa의 막단백질을 암호화하는 세 가지 멤버가 있으며, 세포 내 caveolar 막의 주요 구조 성분을 이룹니다. Caveolin-2 단백질은 섬유아세포, 분화된 지방세포, 평활근 및 골격근, 내피세포에서 풍부하게 발현됩니다. Caveolin-1은 Caveolin-2와 유사한 발현 패턴을 보이며, Caveolin-3은 주로 근육 조직에서 발현됩니다.
