Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in multiple phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a role in regulating tight junction integrity and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue: high and continuous in brain cell contacts, lower and discontinuous in non-neural tissues. The structural features of occludin are highly conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin and other tight junction proteins is linked to increased permeability in tumor endothelium, contributing to brain tumor edema.
