Target Information

Laminins are a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins that form the major noncollagenous component of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through interactions with cell surface receptors such as integrins and laminin-binding proteins.

This gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin laminin receptor 1, also known as:

• 67 kD laminin receptor
• 37 kD laminin receptor precursor (37LRP)
• p40 ribosome-associated protein

The amino acid sequence of laminin receptor 1 is highly conserved, indicating essential biological functions. Expression levels are elevated in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cell lines compared to normal tissues, correlating with invasive and metastatic phenotypes. Multiple copies of this gene exist, most of which are pseudogenes from retropositional events. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode the same protein.
