Target Information

Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that are major noncollagenous constituents of basement membranes. They play roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through interactions with integrin and non-integrin laminin-binding receptors.

The RPSA gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin laminin receptor 1, also known as:

• 67 kD laminin receptor
• 37 kD laminin receptor precursor (37LRP)
• p40 ribosome-associated protein

This receptor’s amino acid sequence is highly conserved, indicating a key biological role. Increased expression has been observed in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cell lines, correlating with invasive and metastatic phenotypes. Multiple pseudogenes exist, likely from retropositional events. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
