Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in multiple phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a role in regulating localization and function of tight junctions. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability. Expression varies by tissue—high in brain tissue at cell-cell contacts, lower and discontinuous in non-neural tissues. Structural features are conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin is linked to increased tumor endothelial permeability and brain tumor edema.
