Ebola virus는 외피를 가진 음성가닥 RNA 바이러스로, Filoviridae과에 속합니다. 이 바이러스는 Marburg virus와 유사한 형태를 가지지만 항원적 특성은 다릅니다. 비분절 RNA 유전체를 가지며, SDS-PAGE 분석 결과 7개의 구조 단백질이 확인됩니다. 주요 단백질은 NP(104 kDa), GP(125 kDa), L(180 kDa), VP40(40 kDa), ViPX(35 kDa), VP30(30 kDa), VP24(24 kDa)입니다. GP는 표면 스파이크의 주요 단백질이며, 125 kDa 단백질 중 유일하게 당화되어 있습니다.
