West Nile Virus (WNV)는 Flaviviridae 계열의 양가닥 RNA 바이러스로, St. Louis encephalitis virus, yellow fever virus, Dengue virus 등을 포함하는 군에 속합니다.
1937년 우간다의 West Nile 지역에서 처음 분리되었으며, 이후 아프리카, 아시아, 유럽, 그리고 미국 전역으로 확산되었습니다.
바이러스 입자는 RNA 게놈을 둘러싼 capsid 단백질의 밀집된 코어와, 세포 침투에 중요한 envelope 및 matrix 단백질이 포함된 막 구조로 구성되어 있습니다.
Core 단백질은 caspase-9 경로를 통한 세포사멸(apoptosis)을 유도하여 염증 반응을 일으키는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
