Target Information
This gene encodes an accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), also known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase.
Complex I is the first multi-subunit enzyme complex of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a vital role in cellular ATP production — the primary energy source for essential cellular processes.
It transfers electrons from NADH to ubiquinone via protein-coupled redox centers, contributing to proton gradient formation across the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Complex I is composed of at least 41 subunits, 7 encoded by mitochondrial DNA and the remainder by nuclear genes.
