Target Information

Cathepsin L (CTSL1) is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase involved in intracellular protein catabolism. It degrades substrates such as collagen, elastin, and alpha-1 protease inhibitor, which regulates neutrophil elastase activity.
This enzyme is associated with several pathological processes, including myofibril necrosis in myopathies, myocardial ischemia, and renal tubular response to proteinuria.
It belongs to the peptidase C1 family and forms a disulfide-linked dimer composed of heavy and light chains derived from a single precursor protein.
At least two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene.
