Target Information
CD86 is one of two ligands (the other being CD80) for CTLA4 and CD28. It functions as a costimulatory molecule in T-cell activation during antigen presentation. Insufficient co-stimulation involving CD86/CD80 can induce tolerance. CD86, a type I membrane protein and member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is expressed by antigen-presenting cells and binds to CD28 and CTLA4 on T cells. Binding with CD28 provides a costimulatory signal for T-cell activation, while binding with CTLA4 inhibits T-cell activation and reduces immune response. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms. Dysregulation of CD86 is associated with diseases such as gallbladder squamous cell carcinoma and myocarditis.
