Ribosomes are the organelles responsible for protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for protein kinases in the ribosome, with phosphorylation occurring at five C-terminal serine residues.
Phosphorylation is stimulated by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. The protein contributes to cell growth and proliferation control through selective mRNA translation.
Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
