Target Information

This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its main function is to produce NADPH, a key electron donor in defense against oxidizing agents and in reductive biosynthetic reactions.
G6PD exhibits significant genetic diversity, with many variants resulting from missense mutations that affect enzyme activity and clinical symptoms.
Deficiency in G6PD may cause neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
