Target Information
Calponin is a thin filament-associated protein involved in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. It binds to actin, calmodulin, troponin C, and tropomyosin. Calponin is expressed in smooth muscle and tissues with significant smooth muscle content. Two isoforms exist (34 kDa and 29 kDa); the 29 kDa form is mainly found in the urogenital tract. Calponin expression is also observed in myoepithelial cells from benign and malignant breast lesions. It stains smooth muscle, myoepithelial cells, myofibroblasts, keratinocytes, and nerve fibers, aiding differentiation of breast collagenous spherulosis (positive) from adenoid cystic carcinoma. Adenoid cystic carcinoma in salivary gland tumors is calponin positive.
