Target Information
Crystallins are the major structural proteins of the lens, comprising about 95% of lens proteins. They are also found in vertebrate skeletal muscle tissue. In the lens, crystallins help maintain the proper refractive index. The mammalian lens contains three major classes of crystallins: alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha-crystallin is composed of two primary gene products, alpha-A and alpha-B, and represents about 40% of total lens protein. It functions as a molecular chaperone, preventing aggregation that may lead to cataract formation. Phosphorylation of alpha-crystallin is associated with cellular stress and may regulate structural and protein maintenance functions. Alpha-B crystallin has been linked to Alexander’s disease, where it accumulates in brain cells.
