Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Upon hormone binding, the receptor dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

AR signaling plays a key role in the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also in non-reproductive organs including muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
The receptor is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase activity, and alterations in its phosphorylation state are linked to MEK1/2 pathway inhibition.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility.
Mutations in the AR gene can lead to complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
