OPA1 is a dynamin-related GTPase critical for maintaining mitochondrial morphology and mtDNA. Mutations in OPA1 are associated with heterozygous optic atrophy, a dominant trait leading to reduced visual clarity and potential blindness. The disease typically begins in childhood and progresses over time due to optic nerve fiber degeneration. OPA1 dysfunction has also been linked to schizophrenia characteristics through mitochondrial network disruption, affecting apoptosis and cellular metabolic regulation.
