POU5F1 (Oct-4)는 초기 발생 단계에서 처음으로 기술된 모계 발현 옥타머 결합 단백질입니다. 배아 발생에서의 역할로 인해 줄기세포 생성 및 퇴행성 질환 치료를 위한 세포 대체 요법 연구에 유용합니다.
POU5F1, Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, c-Myc 등의 발현을 통해 인공 줄기세포(iPS cells)를 생성할 수 있으며, 최근에는 바이러스 없이 플라스미드 발현 시스템을 이용한 iPS 세포 생성이 가능함이 보고되었습니다. 이는 재생의학에서의 안전성 향상에 기여합니다.
