This antibody recognizes human CD8, a cell surface receptor expressed either as a heterodimer with the CD8 beta chain (CD8 alpha/beta) or as a homodimer (CD8 alpha/alpha). CD8 is a T-cell co-receptor involved in recognition of MHC class I molecules and is present on cytotoxic/suppressor T lymphocytes.

Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family. It plays a key role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found as homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers Lck recruitment, leading to cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are critical for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
