Target Information
SMAD2 (MADH2, MAD2) regulates multiple cellular processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. It interacts with TGF-beta receptors through the SMAD anchor for receptor activation, playing a central role in TGF-beta signaling. Phosphorylation of SMAD2 enhances its transcriptional activity and regulates its nuclear translocation with SMAD4, forming transcriptional repressor complexes. SMAD2 can also mediate activin signaling and exists in alternatively spliced transcript variants.
