Target Information
TET1 is a dioxygenase that specifically binds methylcytosine (5mC), a minor base in mammalian DNA crucial for retrotransposon silencing and development. It catalyzes the conversion of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC), which may influence chromatin structure or serve as an intermediate in cytosine demethylation. hmC is enriched in embryonic stem cells and brain tissue, particularly in Purkinje neurons, and TET1 may play roles in fetal development of the heart, lung, and brain.
