NR4A1은 steroid-thyroid hormone-retinoid receptor superfamily에 속하는 단백질로, 뇌, 부신, 갑상선, 간, 고환, 난소, 흉선, 근육, 폐, 전립선 등 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다. 스트레스 자극 및 성장 인자에 의해 발현이 유도되며, 핵 내 전사 인자로서 thymocyte 및 종양세포의 아폽토시스 신호 전달에 관여합니다. 핵에서 미토콘드리아로의 단백질 이동은 세포사멸을 유도합니다. NR4A1은 세 가지 전사 변이체를 가지며, RXR이 NR4A1의 파트너로 알려져 있습니다.
