Target Information
Caspase 8 (CASP8) is a member of the cysteine-aspartic acid protease family and plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis. Caspases exist as inactive proenzymes composed of a pro-domain, large and small protease subunits. Activation involves proteolytic processing to form a heterodimeric enzyme. Caspase 8 mediates programmed cell death induced by Fas and other apoptotic stimuli and interacts with FADD through its death effector domain (DED). It is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s disease and activates downstream caspases including Caspase 9. Caspase 8 also reacts with Jurkat cells and tonsil tissues, and its overexpression induces apoptosis, which can be inhibited by ICE family-specific inhibitors. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
