Target Information
TGF-alpha is an EGF-related polypeptide growth factor that signals through the EGF receptor and stimulates the proliferation of various epidermal and epithelial cells. It is produced by monocytes, keratinocytes, and tumor cells. TGF-alpha induces anchorage-independent transformation in cultured cells. Human, murine, and rat TGF-alpha are cross-species reactive. TGF-alpha (aa 50) has 33% homology to EGF, binds to EGFR, activates receptor tyrosine phosphorylation, and promotes cell proliferation. It plays a role in tumor initiation by inducing a reversible transformed phenotype.
