Claudin 5는 클라우딘 패밀리에 속하는 막 단백질로, 세포 간 밀착연접(tight junction)의 주요 구성 요소입니다. 이러한 연접은 상피 및 내피 세포 사이의 공간을 통한 용질 및 수분의 자유로운 이동을 차단하며, 세포 극성 유지 및 신호 전달에 중요한 역할을 합니다. Claudin 5 유전자는 다양한 암종(유방암, 난소암, 간세포암, 요로암, 전립선암, 폐암, 두경부암, 갑상선암 등)에서 발현 차이를 보입니다. 또한 여러 가지 대체 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
