Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPL39 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 5q.
