Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to a promoter element referred to as an X box.
This gene product is a bZIP protein that also acts as a transcription factor binding to the enhancer in the promoter of T cell leukemia virus type 1.
It may increase viral protein expression by partnering with a viral transactivator.
Upon accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the mRNA of XBP1 is processed to an active form by an unconventional splicing mechanism mediated by IRE1.
This splicing removes 26 nucleotides, producing the active isoform XBP1(S).
The unspliced isoform XBP1(U) acts as a negative feedback regulator of XBP1(S), turning off transcription during ER stress recovery.
A pseudogene of XBP1 has been identified on chromosome 5.
