This gene encodes a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. It functions similarly to ubiquitin, binding to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which directs proteins to degradation, SUMO2/3 is involved in cellular processes such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. Activation requires cleavage of the last two amino acids at the carboxy-terminus. Several pseudogenes and alternative splice variants exist.
