Target Information
This gene belongs to the GPI family whose members encode multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase proteins involved in energy pathways. The encoded protein is a dimeric enzyme catalyzing the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
- Intracellular function: Participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis.
- Extracellular function: Acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene are associated with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and severe enzyme deficiencies that can cause hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
