Versican은 대형 응집성 프로테오글리칸 계열(aggrecan, brevican, neurocan 포함)에 속하는 단백질로, 섬유성, 관절, 탄성 연골뿐 아니라 신경, 표피, 동맥 및 느슨한 결합 조직 등 다양한 조직에 분포합니다.
Versican V1은 세포 증식을 촉진하고, 세포 변형을 유도하며, 세포를 apoptosis로부터 보호하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이는 proapoptotic 단백질 Bad의 발현을 하향 조절함으로써 이루어집니다. 또한 Versican이 인간 기도의 세포외기질 단백질로 존재함이 밝혀져, 천식 환자에서 염증성 역할을 하는 것으로 보고되었습니다.
