Target Information
In vertebrates, there are four major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes: hexokinase I, II, III, and IV.
Hexokinase catalyzes the first step of glucose metabolism, converting glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, thereby committing it to the glycolytic pathway.
Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is the predominant isoform in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle, and its expression is insulin-regulated.
Studies in rats suggest HK2 is involved in the enhanced glycolysis observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
